The Dr. Loretta Chiarenza Bioscience & School of Business
Memorial Scholarship Meet and Greet

Virtual Meet & Greet

On December 9, 2021, a virtual Meet & Greet was held with Derek Chiarenza in South Carolina, and his current scholarship recipients, Kacie Lyzak, a sophomore student majoring in Bioscience and Christopher Canenguez, a junior student majoring in Computer Science.  Joining them were President John Nader, Matthew Colson, Vice President of Development & Alumni Engagement, Dr. Charles Adair, Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Richard Vogel, Dean of the School of Business, Michelle Johnson, Director of Alumni Engagement and Alumni Relations and Babette Lasky, Manager of Scholarships and Donor Stewardship.

Kacie shared slides of a series dilution and discussed learning how to use the different tools of transferring liquid. She also shared slides of a blood typing test using her own blood and a serum test to show if two things are identical, partially identical or non-identical.

Chris shared a program recreating the very popular game Flappy Bird, and discussed how he created it and what he learned while building it.

This virtual Meet & Greet was a wonderful way for the students to express sincere gratitude for the Chiarenza Family’s generosity and for Mr. Chiarenza to meet two of the many students that he and his family have helped to achieve their goals and dreams over the years.

The Dr. Loretta Chiarenza Memorial Scholarships for Bioscience and the School of Business were established in 1998 by Loretta’s husband, Dr. Angelo Chiarenza, and children Derek Chiarenza and Julie Tubens.  Dr. Loretta Chiarenza was a faculty member of Farmingdale State College for 22 years. She served as a Professor of Biology and as Associate Dean of the School of Business.
